Musica Sacra International festival choir

19 - 22 May 2018

For more than 25 years, Musica Sacra International has united singers and musicians with different cultural backgrounds and religions in Marktoberdorf. We are inviting all interested guests to sing actively in our festival choir with this year´s focus on experiencing the spirit.

On four afternoons, the participants will elaborate a concert programme together with Chorus Cantorum Finlandiae (supporting choir). The festival choir is conducted by the renowned vocal ensemble Singer Pur. The programme will be presented to the public in two concerts at the end of the festival.

In the mornings, the singers have the opportunity to participate in open lectures held by each and every ensemble.

We warmly invite you to visit numerous concerts with high-class music and celebrate together with the ensembles in the Bayrische Musikakademie Marktoberdorf.

Programme 2018

How individuals of different cultures discover spirit is variable and equal at the same time. The spirit might well have the effect to fuel us, albeit it stems from another religion or is expressed in a foreign language. Hence spirit has the power to unite people beyond cultural and religious barriers. In the context of Musica Sacra International 2018 the spirit of different world religions, regions and cultures will be combined in the festival choir.

The singers will work on:

-              Hebrew psalms by Salomone Rossi (Italian Renaissance)

-              Jewish lamentations written for the Catholic Church by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina

-              a song from north Namibia

-              works of Islamic traditions and from India

The singers will premiere a song by Hans Schanderl which was especially composed for this       year´s festival choir.

Conduction of the Festival choir - Singer Pur

Beside their artistic virtues it is the continuing enjoyment of experimentation and the resulting unusual programmes which are the particular qualities of this 6–person ensemble. All 6 members will collaborate with the festival choir. Singer Pur is probably Germany´s most famous vocal ensemble. The singers have received numerous prices and awards and have published more than 25 CDs. Their repertoire ranges from medieval music to contemporary works, from religious music to folk songs and jazz.

Chorus Cantorum Finlandiae - Suomen Kanttorikuoro

The ensemble Chorus Cantorum Finlandiae, with its roots far back to the 19th century, will support this year´s festival choir. It solely consists of professional musicians and music students and is focusing on spiritual songs, classical-oratorical works as well as contemporary compositions of liturgical music.

conductor: Dr. Kari Turunen
